It’s not an exaggeration to say An Horse have rapidly become one of my favorite bands. Their music is incredibly relatable to me, and I’ve already seen them play three times. I can honestly say these are some of the nicest musicians you’ll ever meet.
I cannot wait until April.

Serious post coming up:
When my dad was still alive one of the things we always talked about was music. He played the sax, I was learning the guitar, and I knew he’d love Kaki King.
He did.
My dad was a 54 year old music teacher who talked to his friends about what an amazing guitarist this woman is, and he was right.
Kaki King used to remind me of lots of things. She reminded me of walking to class in the snow, of being lonely and confused.
Now she reminds me of my dad and how much I miss him.
I was always impressed by The Magnetic Field’s ability to subvert even the most simplistic of songs. Nowhere is this more apparent than on their epic 69 Love Songs. In it, the love song is interpreted in 69 unique ways. What I love most is all the different forms love takes, from teenagers, to forlorn musicians, punks, and “dogs” - depending on how much you read into that song.

Bella are a now defunct band that were based in Calgary. One of their vocalists, Charla McCutcheon currently plays in the band Char2D2.
Bellabands are apparently something pregnant women wear on their stomaches. This has made it hard for me to find much information on these guys, not to mention the fact that searching “Bella” simply brings up pictures of K-Stew. Thanks internet.
Anyway, Bella were founded in 2003 in Calgary. They play some synth heavy pop that personally makes me want to get up and dance. It’s good stuff. You should try dancing to it too.
It’s a great shame that I Heart Hiroshima broke up shortly after their second album “The Rip” was released.
So far no word on whether the members are involved in any new projects. Here’s hoping they keep fighting.
ETA: Perhaps I was wrong. It appears they are still trying to put on shows even though their drummer Suzie moved out of Australia.

Love love love Ms. Monae.
Janelle might not be an official member of the queer army, but she has said good things about us, and she has great hair.

Happy New Year, Queers.
I discovered this marvelous band, founded in sunny Brisbane, in the dead of winter 2009. It’s hard to believe I’ve been listening to An Horse for 2 years, but I’m still very much smitten with them and their debut release.
Rearrange Beds is an album about a relationship gone bad. It’s about losing love, but coming out alright on the other side. Listening to the album reminds me of trekking to class in the dead of winter through snow and ice, but it also reminds me that the snow will melt, and things will get better.
Good luck in 2010, everybody.
